Nonfiction Picture Challenge: Mock Sibert Predictions

January 22, 2020 Alyson Beecher

On early Thursday morning, I take off for Philadelphia for the ALA Midwinter Meeting. I am not ready. I still need to pack and I never really like the process of getting somewhere but I know once I touch down in Philadelphia and get involved in discussions and seeing friends that I will be completely excited. If you can’t make it to Philadelphia, join us on Monday for the Youth Media Award announcements via livestreaming.

The 2020 Youth Media Award announcements will take place on Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, at 8 a.m. ET from the Pennsylvania Convention Center, in Philadelphia. Fans can follow the action live at http://ala.unikron.com , @AmericanLibraryAssociation or by following #ALAyma20 .

At the end of October, I posted about doing a Mock Sibert Award or Sibert Smackdown with students and then made some predictions about possible winners. Please check out the posts here: Mock Sibert Awards | Mock Sibert Predictions

The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award goes to the most distinguished informational book published in the United States. Since I did a bit more reading after my initial post in October, I am going forward and making the following predictions…However, given that last year, I only got one right, we will have to wait and see what really wins.

Winner:

The First Dinosaur: How Science Solved the Greatest Mystery on Earth by Ian Lendler, Illustrated by C.M. Butzer (Margaret K. McElderry Books)

Honor Books:

Todos Iguales/All Equal: Un Corrido de Lemon Grove/A Ballad Of Lemon Grove by Christy Hale (Lee & Low Books)

Birds of a Feather: Bowerbirds and Me by Susan L. Roth (Neal Porter Books)

Manhattan: Mapping the Story of an Island by Jennifer Thermes (Harry N. Abrams)

Torpedoed: The True Story of the World War II Sinking of "The Children's Ship" by Deborah Heiligman (Henry Holt & Co.)

For fun, I am doing a Sibert Giveaway. Here are the rules:

1. You must complete a Mock Sibert post or a Sibert Smackdown post with your own predictions (or the predictions of your class) by Sunday, January 26, 2020 and add the link below and a comment in the comments section.

2. A Winner will be randomly selected on Tuesday, January 28th and announced on Wednesday, January 29th here on the blog.

3. You must be 13 years or older to enter (or have a parent enter on your behalf).

4. You must have a US or Canadian mailing address or if the book is available through Book Depository and they deliver to your country, please feel free to enter.

5. Winner will receive a copy of the 2020 Sibert Winner (or if you already own that book then one of the honor titles).

6. Special prize: If more than one of my predictions are correct, then the winner will receive a complete set of the 2020 Sibert titles (winner and all honor books selected this year).

7. Please do not add personal information like your email or mailing address in the comments.

Don’t forget to link up your nonfiction reviews…
