#Road2Reading Challenge: Congratulations to the Geisel Winners

February 15, 2018 Alyson Beecher

The Theodore Seuss Geisel Award given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.  Last week, I made my predictions. On Monday, at the ALA Youth Media Awards the Geisel Winners were announced. Click here to read the ALA Press release for the 2018 Theodore Seuss Geisel Medal Winners.

When the announcements were made, I was thrilled to hear that they had selected five honor books and one winner. Last year, I had not read most of the books that won and though I thought I had no pulse on the possible winners, two of the three books I called were on the list. Congratulations to all of the authors, illustrators, and publishers.

Winner of the Geisel Award:

Charlie and Mouse by Laurel Snyder; Illustrated by Emily Hughes (Chronicle Books)

Honor Books:

I See A Cat by Paul Meisel (Holiday House)

King and Kayla and the Missing Dog Treats by Dori Hillestad Butler; Illustrated by Nancy Meyers (Peachtree Publishers)

My Kite is Stuck! And Other Stories (A Duck, Duck, Porcupine! Book) by Salina Yoon (Bloomsbury)

Noodleheads See the Future by Tedd Arnold, Martha Hamilton, and Mitch Weiss; Illustrated by Tedd Arnold (Holiday House)

Snail & Worm Again by Tina Kugler (HMH Books for Young Children)

Again, congratulations to all of the authors and illustrators and publishers. Look for all of these at your indie bookstore and public library.

For more great books for early readers, check out the CYBILS Winners here.

Early Reader:

King & Kayla and the Case of the Secret Code by Dori Hillestad Butler; Illustrated by Nancy Meyers (Peachtree Publishers)

Early Chapter Book:

Wedgie & Gizmo by Suzanne Selfors; Illustrated by Barbara Fisinger (Katherine Tegan Books)
